Chapter Seventeen

DURING DINNER THAT evening, for the first time in over a year, Nick turned off his phone. He’d already ignored a couple of messages from Jude—undoubtedly catching him up on her date, which could easily wait until work the next morning—and he didn’t want any other kind of distractions.

“Okay, tell me more about being a fairy.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.” Carefully, so as to not splatter sauce on his shirt, Nick forked a slice of lasagne and slid it carefully into his mouth. “I mean, it’s not every day I get to meet one.”

“Well, if the stories are true, humans and fairies are descended from the same common ancestor. We diverged just a couple of thousand years ago. My grandparents were the first generation of fairies in my family.”

“Wow.”

“That’s why we look like you. Wings aside.”

“Right.”

“And height.”

“Height? You’re about the same height as me, aren’t you?” Nick looked over to him, and found he was able to make eye contact without having to adjust his posture. He was sure they were around the same height.

“Only when I’m here. When I’m in my natural form, I…why don’t I show you?” Oberon stood his fork up in the lasagne and stood behind his chair. In a flash of light, he had seemingly disappeared. It wasn’t until he sent a shower of sparks up into the air, to catch Nick’s attention, that Nick saw him standing on the back of the chair.

“A mouthful,” Nick laughed. There was another flash of light, and Oberon reappeared at his “human” height, behind his chair.

“So, not so different,” he said, retaking his seat and cutting off a bite of lasagne with the side of his fork.

“No.” Nick took a swig of his beer, and a devilish smirk danced across his lips. “And how about for fun and games? Does it work the same as mine does?”

“I’ve had no complaints,” Oberon replied, the glint in his eye matching Nick’s. “And size is certainly not an issue there at all.”

Nick guffawed. It was low and booming.

Oberon liked it.

“We are definitely not so different, then.”

Nick had downed six bottles of beer over the course of the evening. Oberon wasn’t drinking, but Nick’s relaxation and high spirits were rubbing off on him, and both men were spending one of the most enjoyable nights either of them had had in a long time.

“So,” said Nick, slurring his words a little. “I think I have one more question for you.”

“Shoot.”

“What exactly do you wear beneath that robe of yours?”

Oberon smiled a wicked smile and stood up. Quick as a flash, he hitched up the bottom of his robe, before letting it fall back down.

“Nothing.”

“Nice.” Nick’s eyebrows raised as a smile plastered itself across his face. “Very nice.”

Oberon collapsed back onto the sofa.

“You know, among my people there is a rule.”

“A rule?”

“Yes, I have shown you what is beneath my robe, so…”

“Fair’s fair, I guess…” Using the arm of the sofa to steady himself, Nick rose to his feet and unbuckled his belt. “You know, before I do, I have to say.
